Apple may release a new iPad-like smart home display next year, running a tvOS-based ‘homeOS.’ According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a fresh move into the smart home market with this rumored display. The new operating system, homeOS, will be similar to the software that currently powers HomePods, and it’s based on Apple TV’s tvOS.

Gurman mentions that this smart display will run apps like Calendar, Notes, and Home. Apple is even testing prototypes that can be mounted on the wall using magnets. What’s more exciting is the addition of Apple Intelligence, a feature not yet available on HomePods.

Rumors about such a device have been floating around for a while now, with speculation ranging from a HomePod with a screen to a display on a robotic arm that can move to face you during video calls. However, the possibility of this product seems more real than ever. Recently, there have been talks about a square-shaped “HomeAccessory” device that users could control using hand gestures from a distance. MacRumors also reported finding code references related to the device and homeOS.

This iPad-like display sounds like a practical alternative to Apple’s more futuristic concepts like the robotic screen. Plus, it could be a more affordable and streamlined option compared to using an iPad as a smart home controller, which many find clunky and inefficient. We’ll have to wait and see when Apple officially announces this, but it seems we won’t have to wait too long!
